Da Nang has quietly become one of Vietnam's best cities to visit: a long stretch of clean beach, a modern riverside, dramatic mountains on either side, an international airport, and Hoi An just half an hour away. It works equally well as a base for a week or a stop of two days.
My Khe Beach
A wide, clean beach running along the east side of the city. Locals swim at sunrise and again after work — join the early crowd and you get calm water and a genuinely local scene. Currents can be strong outside the flagged areas, particularly in the wetter months.
Marble Mountains
Five limestone hills honeycombed with caves, shrines and viewpoints, about fifteen minutes south of the city. Take the lift up and walk down. Bring a torch for the darker caves and wear shoes with grip — the steps are worn smooth.
Dragon Bridge
Crosses the Han River and breathes fire and water on weekend nights.
Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge
The famous bridge held by two giant stone hands sits inside a mountaintop resort complex reached by a long cable car. It is a full, busy day out and unmistakably a theme park rather than a quiet viewpoint — going in knowing that is the difference between enjoying it and being disappointed.
Go on a weekday, take the first cable car of the morning, and accept that cloud may sit on the summit at any time of year.
Son Tra Peninsula
Jungle roads, the huge Lady Buddha statue looking out over the bay, and viewpoints back across the city. Best in the late afternoon. Parts of the road are steep and rough — not the place for a first-ever motorbike ride.
Hai Van Pass
The coastal mountain pass north towards Hue, and one of the best drives in Southeast Asia. Hire a driver, take a guided motorbike transfer, or ride it yourself only if you hold the correct licence. The train between Da Nang and Hue covers similar coastline if you'd rather sit back.
Hoi An as a day trip — or the other way round
Hoi An's lantern-lit ancient town is thirty minutes away and is the reason many people come to this stretch of coast at all. Both directions work: stay in Da Nang for the beach and city food and visit Hoi An in the evening, or stay in Hoi An and come to Da Nang for the day.
How long to stay
Two days covers the highlights. Four to five turns it into a proper coastal base with time for Hoi An, a slow beach morning and one mountain day.
