Phu Quoc 4-Day Itinerary

White sand, a sea-crossing cable car, island snorkelling and west-coast sunsets — four slow days on Phu Quoc.

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's beach escape, and four days is enough to see both halves of it without ever feeling rushed. The plan works around one simple fact of island geography: the west coast gets the sunsets, so the days end there, while the east and south hold the whitest sand and the boat trips. It starts on Long Beach, heads north to the national park and the quiet beaches, spends a full day in the south on the cable car and the An Thoi islands, and finishes with pepper farms and fish sauce before the flight. Phu Quoc also has its own visa rule that catches people out in a good way — see the tips.

    Day 1

    Arrive and settle on Long Beach

    Land, get to the west coast and do nothing more ambitious than watch the sun go down. Long Beach is where the island eases you in.

    Transport:
    The airport is in the south of the island. Long Beach hotels are 15 to 30 minutes away; the northern beaches around Ong Lang are closer to an hour.

    If you flew in directly from another country, you enter under Phu Quoc's own 30-day visa exemption regardless of nationality — but you will be asked for proof of onward travel. Arriving from Ho Chi Minh City is a domestic flight, so normal Vietnam entry rules applied when you first landed on the mainland.

    Pick your seafood from the ice at the night market and agree the price per kilo before it is cooked. Try the grilled scallops with spring onion.

    Long Beach for restaurants and easy access to Duong Dong, or Ong Lang further north if you want quiet.

    North to the national park and the quiet beaches

    The half of Phu Quoc that still feels like an island — forest, fishing villages and beaches with almost nobody on them.

    Transport:
    About an hour north from Long Beach by car or scooter. The main roads are good; the tracks into the park are not.

    The park covers more than half the island but has few marked trails and little shade. Treat it as a scenic drive with short walks rather than a hiking day, and carry water.

    These northern beaches have fewer facilities than Long Beach — bring cash, and do not count on a card machine.

    Food:
    Sim wine, made from the island's rose myrtle berries, is the local drink and turns up everywhere. Worth one glass.

    Sunset lands somewhere between about 17:45 and 18:15 depending on the month. Be in place twenty minutes early.

    Transport:
    An Thoi is at the southern tip, about 40 minutes from Long Beach.

    Book the boat for the morning — the sea is calmest early and the wind gets up after lunch. Between May and October trips are cancelled far more often, so keep the day flexible. Sun World Hon Thom is a theme park as well as a cable car; you can ride across for the view and come straight back without buying into the park.

    Sao Beach is on the east coast, so it is a daytime beach rather than a sunset one — come while the sun is high and the water is at its most turquoise. It gets busy with tour groups in the middle of the day; late afternoon is calmer.

    Head back to the west side for the sunset — An Thoi and the southwest coast face the right way. Allow 40 minutes to drive back to Long Beach afterwards, and remember the roads are unlit.

    The two things Phu Quoc is genuinely famous for, bought properly on the way to the airport.

    Phu Quoc fish sauce carries a protected designation of origin, and the distilleries are working sites rather than showpieces — the smell is part of it. Buy at the end of the trip and put bottles in checked luggage, because fish sauce is a liquid and will not pass hand baggage.

    The airport is 15 to 30 minutes from Long Beach and about an hour from the northern beaches. Allow two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one.

Tips for this itinerary

  • Phu Quoc has its own 30-day visa exemption, open to all nationalities arriving on a direct international flight to the island. You need a passport valid at least six months and proof of onward travel within 30 days. It is separate from the mainland allowance — but it only applies to direct international arrivals, so flying in from Ho Chi Minh City is a domestic arrival and normal Vietnam entry rules apply.
  • Come in the dry season, November to April, for calm seas and reliable boat trips. From May to October the sea gets rough and snorkelling trips are regularly cancelled at short notice.
  • Sunsets are on the west coast — Long Beach, Ong Lang and the southwest tip at An Thoi. Sao Beach and the east coast face the wrong way, so go there in daylight.
  • Book the An Thoi snorkelling boat for the morning. The sea is calmest early and the afternoon wind picks up.
  • Rent a scooter only with a licence covering motorcycles and a 1968-convention International Driving Permit. Island roads are quiet but unlit at night, and riding without the right paperwork voids your travel insurance.
  • The island is bigger than it looks — roughly 50 km top to bottom. Budget 45 minutes to an hour to cross between the north and the south.
  • Sun World Hon Thom is a theme park as well as a cable car. If you only want the crossing and the view, you can ride and come back without doing the park.
  • Buy fish sauce and pepper at the end of the trip, and put them in checked luggage. Fish sauce is a liquid and will not pass hand-baggage security.
  • Stay north around Ong Lang or Vung Bau for quiet, or on Long Beach for restaurants, bars and easy access to Duong Dong.
  • Grab works on the island but coverage thins out in the far north — agree a return with your driver, or arrange a car for the day.
